Silicone-recycled pyrolyzed fillers for enhanced thermal - and flame - resistant silicone elastomers

Two types of fillers were prepared by controlled pyrolysis a commercial silicone elastomer. An aerobic process led to the formation silica powder while an anaerobic generated silicon-carbon-oxide (SiOC) ceramic. Each filler was incorporated into gum and thus-prepared obtained formulations further crosslinked with peroxide prepare new materials. Silica allowed controlling mechanical properties materials whereas enhanced thermal stability brought ceramic; mixing both joint (tensile strength about 2 MPa, elongation at break 300%, onset degradation 470 °C). The flame resistance behavior these tested cone calorimetry. Early insulating layer on heat-exposed surface moderated heat release (total 16.4 kJ/gPDMS) increased final residue (above 50%) compared silica-filled elastomers.
